The International Day of Peace known as World Peace Day is celebrated in our school on 30th January to promote peace in the Educative Community.
What do English teachers do?
Take part in different activities in different sessions. It is a pedagogic celebration very important due to its great transcendence in a world where the bullying and domestic violence must be stopped, when we watch or listen to unpleasant news, doing a better evolved society among us.
The symbols that we use in our classroom...
The peace dove flying with an olive branch in its beak is one of the most common featured symbols for the day.The dove represents hope for peace and it is represented as still in flight to remind people of its role as messenger.
Our quotes in pre-primary education are...
" Make this world a place of peace"
"Peace begins with a smile" (Mother Teresa)
"Don't let the behaviour of others destroy your inner peace" (Dalai Lama)
" Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world" (Nelson Mandela)
Teachers, parents and pupils have engaged in this international Day of Peace in diverse and meaningful ways or activities:
Intercultural dialogues
Workshops
Music and festivals
Service to others
Writing quotes of famous people
Peace building activities
Creation of filled day of Peace with games, songs, tales ,paintings, artistic and physical activities, dances, recitals, poems, tongue twisters ... from the point of view of different areas or abilities, offering all them ideas for observing this global day shared with all humanity, strengthening the ideals of unity and equality, diversity, harmony and above all at advancing the culture of peace.
Our final task: an image is worth a thousand words. We teach by means of pictures, images, colours, quotes of famous people with implicit peaceful messages, symbols such as (doves, hands and hearts) and quotes what really the word peace means and the values that it transmit. For it we elaborate a big collage along the corridor of the school with the activities made in the classroom. The best way to check if our pupils acquire the meaning and values that the word Peace means.
Our following activity is listening to a tale at the same time that teacher ask questions in order to get information about what they have learnt doing listening comprehension.
Listen to a song using gestures and movements. Imagine by j. Lennon, adapted for our pupils of this age.
Finally, reproduce a short dialogue which main characters are our older pupils.
On this Day,we must all renew our commitment to global solidarity. To keep peace we should build it every day in every society with every woman and man by working together towards a better common future for all, learning to live in a tolerant way where opinions of all are important and need to be listened.
